Is climate change creating more Intense and Massive Hurricanes?
Climate change is projected to intensify hurricanes due to extremely warm surface ocean temperatures, leading to a more dangerous storm season than initially predicted. While the exact influence of climate change on hurricane behavior isn’t fully understood, evidence suggests that these storms are worsening. Hurricanes are fueled by warm ocean water and humid air, with rising ocean temperatures providing the extra heat necessary for rapid intensification, which is becoming more common. The hurricane season in North America has also shifted, with the first named storms making landfall earlier than in the past, now starting as early as May.
