Amazon Delivery Drivers Hold First Ever Strike Because of Extreme Heat
Delivery drivers working for Amazon in Southern California have unionized in response to unsafe working conditions and extreme heat exposure. The drivers, who operate Amazon-branded vans through third-party subcontractors, have been on an indefinite strike since June 24, demanding fair pay, worker safety in the heat, and the right to refuse unsafe deliveries. The Teamsters union, representing the drivers, argues that Amazon exerts significant control over their work, making them de facto employees, while Amazon maintains they are not technically employed by the company.
