US Sets New Record High for Climate Disasters in 2023
In 2023, the United States has experienced a record number of climate and weather disasters, each causing over $1 billion in damage, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). So far, there have been 23 such billion-dollar disasters, affecting various regions across the country and resulting in a total of 253 deaths and more than $57.6 billion in damages. This surpasses the previous record of 22 such events in 2020. Eight new disasters were added to the list in the last month alone, including devastating wildfires in Hawaii and other extreme weather events. Experts attribute the increase in these disasters to factors like climate change, increased vulnerability, and construction in risk-prone areas.
