Climate Change is Causing Mountains to Crumble
Mountains, such as Mt. Fluchthorn on the Swiss-Austrian border, are facing an unprecedented threat due to climate change causing permafrost to melt. The collapse of Mt. Fluchthorn’s peak, resulting in a massive rockfall, was attributed to the destabilization of the ground caused by melting permafrost. Other peaks, like those in the European Alps and Southern Alps of New Zealand, are also at risk, impacting local communities, especially indigenous groups that rely on traditional knowledge to predict and manage such events. Urgent action to combat climate change and protect mountain ecosystems is needed to prevent further destabilization and preserve these natural wonders.
