Why Aren't There More Solar Panels Over Water Canals?
Solar AquaGrid is set to break ground on the first solar-covered canal project in the United States, addressing both water loss and climate pollution by installing solar panels over canals in sunny, water-scarce regions. A study estimates that this approach in California could save 63 billion gallons of water and generate 13 gigawatts of power, potentially powering Los Angeles for a significant portion of the year. The move comes as various factors, including extreme heat, record wildfires, and growing climate change awareness, are converging to support the implementation of solar-covered canals to combat water loss and promote renewable energy.
