The World's First Artificial Energy Island Now Exists

A consortium of Belgian marine construction companies is preparing to build the world’s first artificial energy island, named Princess Elisabeth Island, which will serve as an offshore wind energy hub in the North Sea, connecting new wind farms and additional interconnectors to the UK and Denmark with Belgium’s onshore power grid. The island will cover six hectares and house transmission infrastructure to connect wind farms, with construction set to begin in March 2024 and last approximately two years.
