Retired Trees and Pigs on Maternity Leave
In the Alentejo region of Portugal, a regenerative grazing project is adopting the ancient agrosilvopastoral system of Montado to improve soil health and biodiversity. The Montado system, which combines trees with livestock and crops, allows for integrated land uses that prevent fires and fertilize the soil. While regenerative grazing has its critics due to livestock’s greenhouse emissions, proponents like Francisco Alves argue that well-managed grazing can coexist with healthy ecosystems and promote high-quality, sustainable meat production.
