More Deadly Tornadoes Happening at Night Resulting in More Fatalities
Severe storms have caused nearly the same number of fatalities in the first three months of 2023 as the average total number of deaths per year in the past. Nighttime tornadoes have been a major factor in the increased fatality rate, being more than twice as deadly as those that occur during the day due to the difficulty of spotting them in darkness. This year has also seen an exceptionally high number of tornadoes, with 13 out of 15 weeks so far experiencing severe weather.
