Massive Oil & Gas Project in Alaska Could Result in a Climate Disaster

The US energy giant ConocoPhillips has received approval from the Interior Department to commence drilling for oil at three federally owned sites in Alaska’s western Arctic. Despite President Biden’s promise to halt new oil and gas development on federal land, he has given the green light to what is now known as “Project Willow,” sparking backlash from environmental groups. Six groups have filed lawsuits in District Court, citing violations of laws such as the National Environmental Policy Act and the Endangered Species Act, with concerns that the project will have detrimental effects on Alaskan wildlife, ecosystems, and communities, and will also lead to a climate disaster.
