EU Looking at Phasing Out Fossil Fuel Soon
The EU is urging governments to commit to renewable energy, energy efficiency improvements, and phasing out fossil fuels before 2050. At COP28, climate chief Frans Timmermans is seeking a global pledge for three interconnected goals: tripling annual new renewable energy deployment by 2030, doubling the rate of energy efficiency improvement compared to the last decade, and completely phasing out unabated fossil fuels. The EU aims to lead based on the latest IPCC report and believes COP28 must be a “paradigm shift” for climate action to keep the 1.5-degree temperature limit alive.
