Chicago Study Uncovers 'Underground Climate Change' Threat

A study conducted in Chicago has revealed a phenomenon called “underground climate change,” which is causing the ground beneath cities to deform. This subsurface heat island effect is caused by the heat released by buildings and subterranean transportation systems like subways. While not as severe as atmospheric climate change, this phenomenon could pose long-term challenges for buildings and infrastructure, necessitating better insulation and geothermal technologies to mitigate its effects.
