61,000 Dead After Last Summer's Heat Wave in Europe

A new report by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health reveals that extreme heatwaves led to over 60,000 deaths in Europe in 2022, a number four times higher than previous estimates. Europe’s hottest summer on record brought devastating heatwaves, droughts, and forest fires, contributing to a staggering mortality rate, particularly among older age groups and women. The study emphasizes the urgent need for more effective adaptive responses to combat the increasing frequency and intensity of heat events caused by the human-induced climate crisis in the region.
