10 States Sue US Gov't Because of Steep Flood Insurance Rate Increase.
Louisiana and nine other states have filed a lawsuit against the federal government to prevent steep increases in national flood insurance rates, which could result in some people losing their homes. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. district court in New Orleans, includes dozens of local Louisiana governments and flood control districts as plaintiffs. While FEMA argues that the new premium system is fairer and more accurate, Louisiana officials have expressed concerns about the financial burden the rate hikes could impose on residents, with some facing eventual tenfold increases in their annual premiums, despite never experiencing flooding.
